What is e-SIM? Everything you need to know about e-SIM

If you're curious about highend devices like iPhone 12 or Pixel 5; Or if you are always looking for any new technology, then "e-SIM" is definitely your familiar word. Although e-SIM is not a new technology, this feature has recently been added to some devices of highend and popular. So, like me, if you are curious to know what e-SIM is; But this post is for you.

The SIM card is still an important part for wireless connectivity to any digital device. For more than a decade now, most people have been comfortable using devices that can be used on multiple SIM cards.

But even a millimeter of space on a handy device like a smartphone or a smartwatch is very important. Having room for two 2FF psye SIM cards is therefore a kind of waste. Therefore, to meet the demand, sim card has been changed in the last decade.

We are now used to using micro or nano SIM cards rather than mini SIM cards. Even then, if you can reduce the amount of space required in the smartphone or smartwatch for two nano SIMs, then there is a chance to use the place better. It is from this thought that e-SIM emerged largely.

Not only for device manufacturers, but also for users, e-SIM will bring many benefits. Therefore, it can be emphasized that e-SIM is going to be the future in the coming days, ending the era of ordinary SIM cards. Now let's know how convenient the e-SIM is over the normal SIM card or how the e-SIM works.

What is e-SIM? How it works and its advantages and disadvantages

What is e-SIM

An e-SIM (eSIM) is a type of advanced technology SIM. The full form of which is the embedded subscriber identity module or embedded SIM. I couldn't find a beautiful Bengali word for the word embedded. In this article, we will use the word embedded.

The embedded SIM basically does the job of the conventional SIM card. In that sense, it can be called the replacement of the conventional SIM card. However, there is no opportunity to separate or install the embedded SIM like the conventional SIM card.

It is much smaller than the conventionally used nano SIM. As a kind of connecting chip, it is connected to the device's motherboard; At the time of making the device. Therefore, it can also be called a complete digital SIM card.

After reading this much, did you get worried about the number change or the use of SIM cards of multiple companies? Yes, it is true that in the coming days, there will be no slots like using a normal SIM card on a device with e-SIM. But there's no need to worry about that either.

Because, even if the SIM card is not changed, you can change the operator and the number with the help of e-SIM. At the same time, you can also do the work of using multiple numbers i.e. dual SIM. And you can do it more easily than you do now.

The e-SIM is physically completely different from the normal SIM card, but technically the two work in the same way. That is, e-SIM works using the same GSM network as the normal SIM card.

Can you use e-SIM now?

If you live in Bangladesh, you will not be able to use e-SIM at this time. Because, for the use of e-SIM, such e-SIM devices are required. Similarly, the technical capabilities of the SIM company are required.

GP e-SIM: GP Bangladesh has launched this service. However, several mobile operator companies like AT&T and T-Mobile have launched e-SIM services in more than 120 countries like THE US, UK.

So, if you are a customer of such an operator in those countries and you have an e-SIM supported device; You can use e-SIM at the moment.

Currently, e-SIM has the opportunity to be used on devices; They have slots for e-SIM as well as ordinary SIM cards. So, even if the mobile operator does not have the capacity, you can use a simple SIM card on your device.

The e-SIM-supported devices currently available in Bangladesh are:

All versions of the iPhone 12, iPhone 11, XS, XR, and SE smartphones. From Google Pixel 2 to Pixel 4A 5G, Samsang Galaxy S20, S20 FE, Galaxy Fold and G Flip, and all versions of the Note 10 support e-SIM. Apart from this, there is also an opportunity to use e-SIM in The Moto Razor Duo phone.

Apart from smartphones, apple watch, samsung galaxy watch and huawei watch currently support e-sim. Apart from this, many laptops running Windows 10 also have the ability to use e-SIM.

How to use e-SIM:

If you are a customer of a mobile operator that provides e-SIM service and you have an e-SIM supported device; Then you can easily use e-SIM.

Since there is no opportunity to physically insert the SIM card in the case of e-SIM, so the entire work of activating simcard on the device is done through software. But there's nothing to think about. For this, you do not have to install any special software or be reminded of an expert.

The devices that support e-SIM are provided with e-SIM setup software. As a result, you can easily set up the e-SIM from the setting.

You need to contact the mobile operator company before setting up the e-SIM on the device. You have to tell them which number and on which plan you want to take the e-SIM. After that, the mobile operator company will give you a card with QR code to activate the e-SIM. In this case, you may also have to pay extra money for the card. It will totally depend on the mobile operator company.

When you receive your e-SIM activation card, it just needs to be scanned from the specific settings of your device.

In this case, from the iPhone -

  • Go to Settings first.
  • Then go to the Cellular (or Mobile Data) option.
  • Now go to the Add Cellular Plan option and scan the QR code.

To set up an e-SIM on an Android smartphone-

  • Go to settings option first.
  • Then go to Network & Internet.
  • Now click on the Add option and follow the instructions that come on the screen. Select this option of use 2 number.
  • You can activate the e-SIM on the Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch, from the phone's app.

Benefits of e-SIM:

The biggest advantage of e-SIM is that it is really much smaller. This e-SIM is at least 3 times smaller than the smallest nano-SIM card in circulation today. To insert a nano SIM card where 108.24 square millimeters of space is required; It takes only 30 square millimeters of space to install the e-SIM chip.

As a result of this, the space that had to be kept on the smartphone for the previous SIM slot; Using that space, it will be easier to develop other parts of the phone. Not only will additional space be available for other parts, but it will also make it possible to use a more powerful battery. There will also be a positive change in the internal design of the phone.

The e-SIM does not need to be connected to one side or side of the phone. Therefore, waterproof or dustproof devices can also be easily made. As a result, the price of such devices will also be greatly reduced. Users will also feel quite comfortable using e-SIM.

There will be no need to carry a few SIM cards in your pocket. You don't have to look for a paperclip or alpin to open the tray to keep the SIM card.

Disadvantages of e-SIM:

The relationship between convenience and difficulty is inseparable. Therefore, the use of e-SIM may also face some difficulties. Especially when you change your mobile phone or device; Then, like now, you can not open the SIM card and put it on the new phone.

For this, it may be necessary to contact the mobile operator company. Apart from this, if there is a problem with the device, it may take a little bit of speed to find out. Especially in the case of network problems.

Now if you do not get a network on the phone, you can open your SIM card and pick it up on another phone if you want. By doing this, you can understand whether the problem is with the network or your phone. There is no such opportunity for e-SIM. A device problem means you have to go to the service center.

Besides, it will take some time for e-SIM to become popular as a new technology and penetrate fully mainstream technology. At this time, it will gradually improve. In the same way, the current users will have to face neither technical nor error.

However, since the benefits are heavier than the disadvantages. So, after some time, it is expected that the e-SIM will overcome these limitations and take the place of the SIM card completely.

This was today's discussion about e-SIM. I hope you understand what e-SIM is, how it works and the advantages and disadvantages of e-SIM. If you like this post about e-SIM, then do not forget to share it with friends. Also, if you have any questions or opinions about the e-SIM or this article, let us know in the comment box.
